Rotate video
Turn a sideways or upside-down video the right way up without uploading it. For files whose codecs MP4 can hold, the turn is saved without re-encoding, so it is fast and keeps full quality.
Runs on your device. Your files never leave your browser.
How to use the video rotator
- 01Choose your video file, or drop it onto the box.
- 02Choose how far to turn it clockwise: 90, 180 or 270 degrees.
- 03Check the plan line: it says whether the video will turn without re-encoding.
- 04Click Rotate video, then download the result.
Rotating without re-encoding
An MP4 file can store its orientation as metadata: a note telling the player to turn the picture as it plays. When your video is H.264 or HEVC, with AAC or MP3 sound or none, this tool writes the new rotation into that metadata and copies the video and sound unchanged. The job takes moments and the picture is identical in quality to the original.
Files in other codecs cannot be copied into MP4 as they are, so they are re-encoded to H.264 in MP4, or to VP9 in WebM when your browser cannot make MP4, with the rotation applied, provided your browser can decode them. The plan line tells you which will happen before you start.
Which way to turn it
Every option turns the picture clockwise. 90 degrees fixes a video whose top points to the left, 270 degrees (the same as 90 anticlockwise) fixes one whose top points to the right, and 180 degrees fixes one that is upside down.
The turn is added to any rotation the file already has, so choose it based on how the video looks when it plays now, not on how the camera was held.
Rotate or flip?
Rotating turns the picture around its centre without mirroring it, so text stays readable. If a video reads backwards, like a reflection, it needs a horizontal flip rather than a rotation, and the flip tool does that.

Questions about the video rotator
- Can I rotate MP4 files without losing quality?
- Yes, when the video is H.264 or HEVC with AAC or MP3 sound, or none: the rotation is saved as MP4 orientation metadata and the streams are copied without re-encoding. Other codecs, provided your browser can decode them, are re-encoded, which costs a small amount of quality.
- How do I rotate a video 90 degrees anticlockwise?
- Choose 270 degrees. A 270 degree clockwise turn ends in the same place as a 90 degree anticlockwise one.
- Why is my phone video still the wrong way round after rotating?
- The turn is added to any rotation already in the file. If the video was already being turned by its own metadata, pick the option that corrects how it looks when it plays now, which may be 180 or 270 degrees rather than 90.
- Is my video uploaded?
- No. The rotation runs in your browser; your video, and the rotated copy, never leave your device.
