Speed up video or slow it down
Speed up video or slow it down without uploading it: this video speed changer plays a clip at 0.25x to 4x, and you choose whether to keep the sound or remove it.
Runs on your device. Your files never leave your browser.
How to use the video speed changer
- 01Choose your video file, or drop it onto the box.
- 02Pick a speed: 0.25x, 0.5x or 0.75x to slow down, or 1.25x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x or 4x to speed up.
- 03Choose whether to keep the sound, with its pitch changed, or remove it.
- 04Click Change speed, then download the result.
What happens to the sound
Kept sound is re-timed with the picture, the way a tape played faster or slower sounds: speeding up raises the pitch and slowing down lowers it. At 2x, voices sound noticeably higher; at 0.5x, noticeably deeper. This tool has no pitch-preserving stretch.
If a changed voice would distract, choose Remove for the sound, and the result has no audio track at all. Kept sound is encoded at 48 kHz with at most two channels.
Speeding up: the 60 fps cap
Speeding up re-times every frame, so a 30 frames per second clip played at 2x would have 60 frames per second, and at 4x would have 120. The output is capped at 60 frames per second, and frames that would pass it are dropped. The file then carries no frames beyond that rate.
The length of the result is the original length divided by the speed: a 60 second clip at 4x runs for 15 seconds.
Slowing down: no new frames
Slowing down holds each existing frame on screen for longer; it does not make new frames in between. A 30 frames per second clip at 0.5x plays at 15 frames per second, and at 0.25x at 7.5 frames per second, which looks visibly stepped for fast movement.
Footage recorded at a higher frame rate has more frames to spread out, so it slows down more smoothly: a 60 frames per second clip at 0.5x still plays at 30. A clip slowed to 0.25x runs four times as long as the original.

Questions about the video speed changer
- Can I slow down video as well as speed it up?
- Yes. Choose 0.25x, 0.5x or 0.75x to slow it down, or 1.25x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x or 4x to speed it up.
- Does the sound keep its pitch?
- No. Kept sound is re-timed along with the picture, so its pitch rises when you speed up and falls when you slow down. You can choose to remove the sound instead.
- Does changing speed lose quality?
- The video is re-encoded to H.264, with any kept sound in AAC (or to VP9 and Opus in WebM when your browser cannot make MP4), which costs a small amount of quality. Changing speed cannot be done without re-encoding, because every frame's timing changes.
- Is my video uploaded?
- No. The speed change runs in your browser; your video, and the re-timed copy, never leave your device.
