Choosing an MP3 bitrate
MP3 is a lossy codec, so choosing a bitrate is choosing how much of the original audio detail the encoder is allowed to keep: this tool offers 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps, and a higher figure keeps more detail at the cost of a larger file, the same trade-off as any other lossy audio format.
For plain spoken word, an interview, a voiceover, a lecture, the lower end of that range is usually more than adequate, since speech does not carry the same complexity a lossy encoder has to work hard to preserve. 128 kbps is a reasonable starting point when the recording is speech and file size matters more than headroom.
Music, mixed audio, or anything with more going on than a single voice benefits from sitting higher up the range: 256 or 320 kbps leaves more of the detail intact where a lower bitrate would show up as a flatter, less textured result. There is no setting that removes the trade-off entirely; a higher bitrate is always a larger file for the same length of audio.
Extracting audio from a podcast or interview video
A video recording of a podcast episode or an interview usually only exists as a video because that is how it was captured or published; the audio track underneath is the part that actually carries the content. Extracting it strips the picture away entirely and leaves a standalone MP3, the file most podcast hosting, editing software and players actually expect.
Because the video track is discarded rather than converted, this is a genuinely different job from compressing a video: nothing about the visual quality or file size of any video component matters here, since it does not end up in the output at all. Only the audio track's own bitrate choice affects the result.
The source file's video codec has no bearing on whether extraction works: this tool reads whatever container the video arrives in and pulls out the primary audio track regardless of what video codec sits alongside it, provided the browser can read the file at all.
Only use audio you have the right to
Extracting audio from a video you did not create, or do not have permission to reuse, does not change who owns the rights to it: a podcast, an interview, a piece of music, or any other recording carries whatever rights and licence terms it had before conversion, unchanged.
This applies whether the result is used privately, shared informally, or published somewhere else entirely; converting the file format does not create a new work free of the original's terms, and platforms that host audio generally expect the uploader to hold, or have permission to use, the rights involved.
If you are not sure whether you are allowed to extract and reuse audio from a particular source, that is worth checking before converting, not after: this tool has no way to know where your file came from or what rights apply to it, so that judgement stays with whoever is doing the converting.

Questions about the video to mp3 converter
- How do I extract audio from a video?
- Choose your video file above, pick an MP3 bitrate, then click Convert to MP3. The video track is discarded and the audio is encoded into a standalone MP3 you can download.
- What bitrate should I choose?
- Higher bitrates keep more of the original audio detail and produce a larger file; lower bitrates save space at some cost to fidelity. Plain speech generally holds up fine at a lower bitrate than music or mixed audio does.
- Does it keep stereo?
- Yes. MP3 holds at most two channels: a mono source stays mono and a stereo source stays stereo. A source with more channels than that, such as 5.1 surround, is mixed down to stereo.
- Is my video uploaded?
- No. The whole extraction runs in your browser; your video file, and the MP3 it becomes, never leave your device.
