Most video archives are organised for custody. Editorial teams need them organised for recall.
A filename, folder and recording date help someone locate a file they already know exists. They do little for the harder question: across years of footage, where did anyone explain this idea clearly?

The highest-value archive prompts tend to recur. A media team revisits a theme as the news changes. A B2B team needs different explanations of the same customer problem. A producer needs one person’s position across several appearances.
Write briefs around those recurring editorial needs:
- How has our explanation of this issue changed?
- Where do these speakers agree, and where do they differ?
- What evidence supports this claim across the collection?
- Which moments can introduce this subject to a new audience?

Make provenance part of the output
A trustworthy archive workflow does not end with a polished render. The cut plan is part of the deliverable: it lets an editor review choices before rendering and return to the source afterwards.
This matters more as the collection grows. Scale should increase the material a team can use, not weaken its ability to understand where an edit came from.

Measure usefulness, not volume
Hours stored is an infrastructure metric. Time saved finding a defensible moment is an editorial one. So are the number of recordings reused, the range of sources represented in new work and the speed from question to reviewable cut plan.
The aim is not to produce more video by default. It is to make the video already worth keeping easier to think with.
